Elkhart man’s 78-year-old sentence for armed burglary, sexual battery reduced to 30 years

An Elkhart man’s 78-year sentence on armed burglary and sexual battery has been reduced to 30 years after the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled his original sentence was too harsh.

Michael Middaugh Sr., 51, was sentenced in September 2020 also pleaded pleading guilty criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon. He also admitted to being a habitual offender.

The charges stemmed from an attack on an elderly woman at her home in Bristol.

Middaugh appealed his sentence, based on his plea, and the state ruled in his favor.
