Venturing onto the ice or piers not recommended this week

Officials are reminding anyone visiting the Lake Michigan shoreline to stay off the piers, and stay off the ice.

Berrien County officials remind everyone that the ice shelves that form along the shore are incredibly unstable, and many holes and crevasses in them can be hidden by snow. If you fall through there is an excellent chance you might become trapped.

You’re advised to stay on the beach and not venture out onto the ice. At the same time, piers can become slick and if you fall off, you also run a high risk of being unable to escape from the water. The danger will be high over the next few days thanks to precipitation and shifts in temperature.
