A police officer shot and killed two dogs that attacked a woman who was trying to protect a smaller dog.

The shooting happened just before 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, in the 1200 block of Garden Street.

The Elkhart Truth reports the Elkhart officer saw two pitbull/Staffordshire terrier-type dogs running, near a woman who was lying, hurt, in a driveway.

The officer first tried to taze the dogs, and when that didn’t work, the officer opened fire, hitting the dogs, so he could get to the victim.

The 56-year-old woman suffered multiple dog bites and was taken to the hospital.
