Valparaiso middle school students faces charges after explosives discovered in backpack

A student at Union Township Middle School faces charges after two improvised explosives were found in a backpack.

A Union Township Middle School administrator warned Porter County Police of potential explosives on Wednesday.

Officers and administrators moved students away from a backpack believed to be the source of the threat and quickly secured the area.

The Porter County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad arrived and safely removed two improvised explosives from a students backpack.

The student was taken into custody and now faces a charge of possessing a destructive device.
