Storms cause more delays at Abbott plant in Sturgis

The Abbott Nutrition factory in Sturgis just can’t seem to catch a break.

The facility was closed for months at the largest baby formula factory in the US, due to recalls of three different powdered baby formulas. This caused shortages nationwide and a number of new safety measures following the deaths of two infants, two additional rare bacterial infections, and a criminal complaint from the Department of Justice.

Just 11 days after the plant reopened, strong storms moved through southwest Michigan and overwhelmed the storm sewers in Sturgis, flooding parts of the plant.

The company says this will likely delay the production and distribution of new product a few more weeks.
