Two of Indiana’s most endangered buildings are in Michiana

The annual list of the 10 most endangered historic structures in Indiana has been released, and two of them are here in Michiana.

Indiana Landmarks has published this year’s list of sites across the state on the brink of extinction. Each faces a combination of problems, such as neglect, abandonment, decay and more. The Birdsell Mansion in South Bend is on this year’s list, as is the Kamm and Schellinger Brewery in Mishawaka.

The latter was built in 1853 and found new life in recent decades as the anchor of the 100 Center. A developer is hoping to help the building find new purpose in the community, and many are hoping that the same will happen for the Birdsell in South Bend.

The 100 Center in the 1970s was great, full of shops and life. I remember going there and loved the Pier 1 Imports store on the far right side of the complex.

It would be nice to restore and bring new life to the Mishawaka 100 Center again.
