Tense moments as a six-year-old girl was rescued by lifeguards at Washington Park Beach in Michigan City.
The girl was on an inflatable unicorn around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, and began to float out, being carried by winds blowing out toward the north.
Lifeguard Brendan Balling noticed and Lifeguard Aiden Tharp swam out to the girl to assist her.
About 10 seconds before Tharp reached the girl in the inflatable. it flipped over, and the girl went under.
The lifeguard got to the girl in seconds and brought her ashore. LaPorte County E-M-S checked her out to make sure she was okay.
The girl’s parents said they just lost track of her.
Authorities have issued a reminder that Washington Park Lifeguards are no longer working on weekdays and Labor Day will be their last day of the season.
