BP to pay $2.75M for air pollution violations

British Petroleum will 2 point 75 million dollars for air pollution violations in Northern Indiana.

BP will make the payout to resolve a 2019 lawsuit that accused them of violating legal limits on deadly air pollution at the Whiting Refinery near Lake Michigan.

ABC 57 reports that the Sierra Club sued BP after nine emissions tests on a BP smokestack between August 2015 and October 2019 revealed levels of particles that presented a health hazard to the public.

In April of 2021 a judge ruled that BP violated emissions limits and could be held liable under the federal Clean Air Act.
