Something in the water? Big year for births at Potawatomi Zoo

The Potawatomi Zoo had a great year for babies in 2022.

No one’s sure if it set a record, but there’s no denying that the past year was one of the most active in recent memory for births at South Bend’s beloved attraction.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the year began with screech owl chicks in February, the stork brought a Sichuan takin and a Chicoan peccary in March, a three-banded armadillo in April, a baby sloth in May, flamingo chicks in July, another pair of peccaries in October, and a southern tamandua anteater last month.

Another of the zoo’s sloths might be pregnant right now, according to officials.
