K9 credited with sniffing out attempted shooting, chase suspect in LaGrange Township

A Cass County K9 is credited with sniffing out a suspect wanted for attempted murder in Elkhart

It was around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, when Cass County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a vehicle pursuit which started in Elkhart after police tried to stop Aaron Whitman, 34, after shots were fired into a woman’s apartment in the 1800 block of Filbert Way.

The vehicle pursuit came into Cass County and continued northbound into the Village of Cassopolis, then Westbound into LaGrange Township.

The vehicle struck several stop sticks then came to a stop near a wooded area.

Whitman ran into a thick wooded area.

It was Cass County K9 Neera who found him hiding in thick underbrush.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office filed paperwork on Tuesday in Elkhart Superior Court in connection with this investigation, and an arrest warrant was ordered issued. Aaron Whitman was charged with: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony; Criminal Recklessness, a Level 5 Felony.
