Michigan parents and schools are being encouraged to sign up for the Protect-Mi-Child Registry in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

It’s a free, secure program that keeps kids safe from advertising intended for adults.

Parents are able to register their children’s social media accounts, phone numbers and email addresses to the program in order to block advertisements for products such as alcohol, tobacco, pornography and online gambling.

The program is administered by Unspam, a company that provides the state government with do-not-contact services.

Accounts on apps such as Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram can be registered without affecting the way the apps are used by the children.
