Marijuana use is up among Michigan teenagers.
The CDC reports that one in three Michigan teens has admitted to using marijuana in their lifetime. Berrien County health officials tell WSBT the average age for the first use of any substance is 11, so conversations about marijuana and other drugs can no longer wait until high school.
A 2021 CDC survey says nearly 37% of Michigan’s high school seniors reported marijuana use at some point, with 22% saying they’d used it in the past 30 days. That number is likely even higher, since many cases are unreported.
Health officials warn that marijuana use can be especially harmful to people under the age of 21, since their brains are still developing.
