A Michigan City Police K9 has gone off duty for the final time as a member of the department.

Due to unforeseen health reasons, K9 Axel has retired from active duty and will spend all his time with the family of Officer Steve Wiegel.

Members of the Michigan City Police Department joined Weigel and Axel to celebrate his career with Michigan City Police.

They say K9 Axel will be missed by their officers, staff and those in the community that knew him.
