The building is a piece of Elkhart’s history, and soon it’s coming down.
The C. G. Conn building was the birthplace of generations of musical instruments, including innovations like the first American-made saxophone and the first sousaphone. Now, WSBT reports the historic facility on East Beardsley Avenue is scheduled for a $250,000 demolition that will make way for plans the city has in mind for the space.
City leaders say the building poses a public health and safety issue, especially given its history as a factory. Officials say the space will likely become residential, given the high demand for housing.
