Teen driver lands in Lake Manitou, ending police chase in Fulton County

Deputies in Fulton County arrested an 18-year-old Thursday morning after he drove his car into a lake during a police chase.

Around 3 a.m., deputies tried to pull over a black 2001 Chevrolet Silverado that did not have a visible license plate. When deputies saw the car hit a curb near East 9th Street and Wabash Avenue, where they vehicle failed to yield, the chase was on.

The truck eventually crashed in front of a neighborhood, crashing through a gazebo and a pier before landing in Lake Manitou.

A 17-year-old passenger immediately surrendered. The driver, Hunter Meeks, tried to swim away, but was eventually brought into custody.

The 17-year-old passenger was temporarily detained and later released to family.

Alcohol and speed are believed to have played a factor in the crash and deputies don’t think seatbelts were worn by the driver or the passenger.
