A Niles man who fled from the police and jumped into a pond near Edwardsburg has been sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to resisting and obstructing police.
It happened in May of 2021, when police pulled over the car in which Timothy Craig Vankirk was a passenger. He disobeyed police orders, escaping into a swampy area and a pond.
After being apprehended as he emerged from the water, he tested positive for meth. At the time of this incident, Vankirk was on parole.
Since then, Leader Publications reports he’s faced new charges in Cass County for receiving, concealing, and possessing stolen property, as well as fleeing and eluding.
He was also charged with criminal recklessness in St. Joseph County, Indiana.
