BBB warns of imposters as Medicare open enrollment begins

The Better Business Bureau is warning older adults to beware of imposters as open enrollment begins for Medicare.
The scam typically starts with an email, text message or phone call that appears to be from a government agency. Scammers may ask you to update account information to send a new medical card.
The scammer may also ask for an account number in order to enroll you in a better plan than what you already have.
In any version, the scammers are looking for your personal information in order to steal your identity and money. Open enrollment runs through Dec. 7, so beware.
Tips to avoid enrollment scams:
Never share personally identifiable information with someone who has contacted you unsolicited, whether over the phone, by email, or on social media. This includes banking and credit card information, your birthdate, Social Security number, and, of course, your health insurance number.
Go to official websites. You can enroll or re-enroll in Medicare at Medicare.gov or a marketplace health plan at Healthcare.gov.
Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names or mask their area codes by spoofing to make you trust them. Don’t fall for it.
Know the signs. Medicare will never contact you via email, text message, or phone, asking you to verify personal information.
If you are unsure whether a call or offer is from Medicare or you gave your personal information to someone claiming to be with Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE to report it.
If you’ve been the victim of a scam, please report it to BBB.org/ScamTracker. Sharing your experience can help others avoid falling victim to similar scams.
Residents of Marshall and Elkhart Counties can cast their votes ahead of the election day.
In Marshall County, the County Clerk’s Office in downtown Plymouth is the designated in-person voting center. While in Elkhart County, Goshen First Presbyterian Church or the Lincoln Center in Elkhart are the two locations where early voting is available.
It’s worth noting that early voting has already started in St. Joseph and LaPorte County.
