After years of lobbying from juvenile justice advocates, some Michigan counties are waiving outstanding fees.

Across the state, families owe millions of dollars with some families facing over $100,000 in debt.

Because of this, some advocates are pushing for Michigan to waive the fees.

A Michigan Center for Youth Justice review of 74 Michigan counties found that $28 million in fees were assessed between 2017 and 2019.

Another report from the National Juvenile Defender Center reviewed 10 Michigan counties, finding that most have millions of dollars in unpaid court fees.

Bridge Michigan reports that some counties, including Macomb, Wayne and Washtenaw, have begun waiving outstanding fees.

And now, they say, there is movement to do the same thing statewide.
