BBB warned of ‘Secret Sister’ scam during holiday season

There’s a scam popular this holiday season.
It’s a holiday gift exchange with online friends, called “Secret Sister.”
The BBB says this may sound fun, but is a pyramid scheme and illegal. The secret sister exchange became popular on Facebook, promising participants would receive up to 36 gifts in exchange for sending one gift.
The scam starts with an email or social media post, to sign up for a great, fun program. All you must do is provide your name and address and the personal information of a few additional friends and tack this information onto a list that’s already started of people you’ve never met on the internet. Next, it’s your turn to send an invitation to send a gift to a stranger along with their friends.
The BBB says that pyramid schemes are illegal and you will most likely end up with no gift. They advise to ignore these posts and report them.
