LaPorte County scam calls, posing as sheriff

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says there are two different telephone scams happening in the area.

Both use Sheriff Ronald Heeg’s name during the calls.

The first scam is related to the Sex and Violent Offender Registry. Registered sex offenders are getting calls from someone saying they are the Sheriff. The scammer tells them they need to pay $2,500 for a fine.

The second scam is related to arrest warrants. The scammer calls, pretending to be the Sheriff, and says there is an arrest warrant for the person and that money is the only way to avoid arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office says they will never make a call regarding these requests. If you get a call, you’re advised to hang up.
