A man was sentenced to five years on alternative placement after attempting to take his ex-girlfriend’s dog.

Derek Shults was arrested in August after his ex-girlfriend accused him of stealing her dog.

The woman had called police to her home, where they found Shults in the doorway holding the dog.

The woman stated that Shults had moved out in February of last year and had not been back but that he had been texting her asking to see the dog. She refused to let him see the dog, but Shults went to her house anyway and entered through a window without permission.

The Goshen News says the man put the dog into his vehicle outside the home, and Shults and the woman got into a scuffle, with Shults putting the woman into an arm lock and taking the vehicle keys from her.

Shults was charged with domestic battery with a prior and burglary but pleaded down to burglary.
