A LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputy is credited with confiscating a huge drug haul and arresting two suspects during a traffic stop on the Indiana Toll Road.

A pickup truck was headed eastbound, Tuesday morning, and proceeded to move from the driving lane to the passing lane to pass a semi. While doing so, the pickup truck failed to correctly signal the lane change. The deputy pulled over the driver near the 56-mile marker.

The driver was identified as Maricela C. Bonilla-Torres, 43. of Houston, Texas. The passenger was identified as Erick C. Montes, 44, also from Houston.

As the traffic stop progressed, the deputy developed reasonable suspicion that the two were engaged in criminal activity. Montes refused to follow instructions and was argumentative. He was taken into custody as a precautionary measure. Shortly thereafter, a narcotics K-9 was deployed sniffed out narcotics from the interior of the pickup truck.

A search turned up multiple vacuum-sealed rectangular packages of suspected narcotics.

Both suspects were both arrested for Dealing Cocaine. They’re being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
