Michigan has spent a billion dollars on EV and battery plants, creating 200 jobs so far as the plants work toward completion.

Most of those plants are delayed or have been downsized, according to Bridge Michigan. The state has spent $1 billion in corporate incentives and pledged hundreds of millions more for the electric-vehicle and battery projects around the state.

Governor Whitmer has pursued a platform that would make Michigan a leader in the auto industry’s effort to transition to EVs rather than combustible engines. EV sales, however, have underperformed and the industry’s future is uncertain.

Another $1 billion has been pledged by the state for five companies leading the charge: Ford, Gotion, LG energy Solution, and Out Next Energy.
