On July 6, 2024, Elkhart County Sheriff’s officers went to a home on Pendleton Drive to check on a man and his two children. Arriving around 9:06 p.m., they found the man inside, armed, and threatening to harm his kids and law enforcement.

The Elkhart County SWAT Team arrived at 12:09 a.m. on July 7 to secure the scene. The man refused to come out and fired a shot before barricading himself inside. As the standoff continued, the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team took over.

Despite many attempts to contact him, there was little success. Finally, at 3:30 p.m., the police entered the home and arrested Ryan Snyder, 37. They found a two-year-old boy deceased and a four-year-old girl, who was treated and released to a relative.

Snyder was taken to the hospital and then jailed. The case is under investigation by Indiana State Police and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit, with the prosecutor’s office set to review charges.
