A Dowagiac man has been sentenced to jailtime and probation for assaulting his ex-girlfriend and killing her dog.

Joshua Ryan Cowley, 23, pleaded guilty to animal torture, receiving 60 days in jail, two years probation, 100 hours of community service, and nearly $3,000 in fines, plus 30 days for domestic violence.

Leader Publications reports the incident, back in July, involved breaking into her home, assaulting her, and killing her chihuahua. Cowley, who has bipolar disorder, apologized and pledged to change.
