Elkhart man killed after being struck by train in Mishawaka

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)

A 46-year-old Elkhart man was struck and killed by a train in Mishawaka. It happened on Friday afternoon, Dec. 27, near the Norfolk Southern Railroad and South Main Street crossing.

Mishawaka Police stress the importance of staying away from tracks when the crossing gates are closed, also reminding that it is a crime to be on the railroad tracks in and of itself.

From Mishawaka Police:

Early this afternoon, a 46-year-old male from Elkhart was struck and killed by a train.  This occurred near the crossing of the Norfolk Southern Railroad and South Main Street.  For whatever reason, the male did not see the train approaching.  He was struck and killed by the train.

The Mishawaka Police Department cannot stress enough that when the crossing gates are closed, stay away from the tracks.  Trains cannot stop quickly and are very unforgiving.  Further, if one is to cross a set of tracks when there is no train, they should do this at a marked crossing.  It is also a crime to be on the railroad tracks in and of itself.  The charge is Railroad Trespass and is people can be arrested on sight.
