A two-vehicle crash on State Road 120 near York Hills Drive resulted in lots of damage, one injury, and an arrest for suspected impaired driving, authorities reported.

The crash happened just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, when Elkhart County Sheriff’s deputies say a Ford Fusion, driven by Darren Jackson, 30, of Middlebury, tried to pass a Nissan Sentra. The Nissan, driven by a 50-year-old Middlebury woman was turning north at the time.

According to police, Jackson failed to yield the right of way and struck the woman’s vehicle head-on before losing control. The Fusion veered off the south side of the roadway, hitting several large rocks, a utility pole, a stop sign, and the entrance sign to York Hills Sun Homes before rolling onto its passenger side.

Jackson sustained lower extremity and back injuries and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital. The Middlebury woman wasn’t hurt.

Jackson was arrested at the hospital after police determined alcohol played a role in the crash.
