Michigan lawmakers move on transparency legislation

Lawmakers in Michigan have acted to improve transparency in public records.

Last week the GOP-led House adopted rules requiring lawmakers to publicly sponsor budget earmarks before a vote, and the Democrat-controlled Senate approved a plan to subject the governor and legislature to public records requests.

Bridge Michigan reports that both parties have spoken up about the need for increased transparency in the state’s government, although the final fate of the public records legislation is still very much uncertain.

Previous transparency efforts have stalled, including an effort last year.
