Purdue University is fighting against food insecurity in Indiana using an unusual tool.
Decision-making to help solve societal issues like food insecurity are being outsourced to Artificial Intelligence. Assistant Professor of Computer Science Alex Psomas, an expert in machine learning, says AI algorithms have evolved and are being used in collaboration with the Indy Hunger Network.
Open source code allows for other organizations nationwide to use the same resource to work on the problem in their own communities.
Through the use of AI, rejected food that would have been sent to landfills is instead going into food pantries.
