A 14-year-old girl was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend after a collision with a pickup truck on County Road 42, near the intersection with County Road 33.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred just before 6 p.m. on Monday, April 14, as a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 17-year-old Syracuse boy, was traveling westbound on County Road 42. Schmucker’s vehicle collided with a red bicycle, ridden by Delilah Schrock, also traveling westbound.

Following the collision, Schrock’s bicycle became trapped under the truck and was dragged before the vehicle came to a stop. Schmucker exited the truck and discovered Schrock lying in the grass. Schrock sustained injuries to her face, left ankle, and left shoulder but was conscious and breathing when first responders arrived.

Schrock was transported by medical air flight to Memorial Hospital.

Schmucker, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, showed no signs of impairment after a Standardized Field Sobriety Test. Deputies noted that drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.

The incident is currently under investigation, and deputies are considering potential enforcement actions.
