Local leaders are pushing to save the Johnson Street Dam as its federal operating license nears expiration in 2030.
A critical deadline is approaching at the end of 2025, when Indiana Michigan Power must decide whether to reapply for the license.
A local committee is working to preserve the dam, a vital part of Elkhart’s identity.
Indiana Michigan Power plans to file a notice of intent to keep options open, move forward with repairs, and include the dam in long-term energy plans.

IF the dams were gone the property tax revenue for the schools would drop precipitously, wouldn’t it? Then there is the flooding if the dams were gone.
