A high-speed chase on the Indiana Toll Road ended in a crash and foot pursuit Thursday after a suspect fled from a traffic stop attempt.

According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was monitoring westbound traffic near the 53-mile marker on I-80/90 around May 29 when he observed a Porsche following too closely behind a commercial vehicle. When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the Porsche accelerated and fled, prompting a pursuit.

The chase continued westbound until the 49-mile marker, where traffic had slowed due to construction. The Porsche sped past vehicles in the inside lane and, near the SR 39 exit, swerved between two vehicles and struck the rear of a van before veering off the roadway into a ditch.

The driver exited the vehicle and ran north into a wooded area, ignoring officers’ commands. Deputies established a perimeter and located the suspect a short time later in the 1300 west block of County Road 450 North.

The driver was identified as 31-year-old Shay A. Palmer of Muskegon, Michigan. After receiving medical clearance, he was transported to the LaPorte County Jail.

Palmer faces multiple charges including auto theft (Level 6 felony), resisting law enforcement with a motor vehicle, resisting law enforcement, and reckless driving. He remains in custody on a $755 cash-only bond.

Why such a low bond. He endangered a lo of people with his antics. Keep him locked up for the safety of others and himself.
