According to Consumer Reports, many Americans overpay for cell service, but they can save up to $500 annually by switching to Mobile Virtual Network Operators, such as U.S. Mobile, Consumer Cellular, or Ting.
These smaller carriers lease space on major networks, offering comparable service at lower prices.
To save, assess your data usage and choose an MVNO operating on the network that works best in your area.

How exactly does adding a middleman make things less expensive? This is quite counterintuitive, and as such it is probably something that should have been included in the article.
I know that years ago I was suckered into a similar program with a NIPSCO alternative, and what was supposed to save money ended up costing quite a bit more (and for worse service)!
