A 31-year-old Elkhart man is facing five felony charges after police say he repeatedly struck a woman with his vehicle and fled the scene.
According to the Elkhart Police Department, officers were called to 111 E. Lusher Avenue around 10:20 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, for a hit-and-run with injuries. The 42-year-old victim told police that a man she knew ran her over multiple times before driving away. She was taken to a hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.
Investigators found the suspect’s Ford Explorer a short time later near 400 E. Simonton Street. Officers arrested Christian Hernandez Gonzalez in the same area and took him to the Elkhart County Jail. Police said Gonzalez and the victim had been in a prior relationship.
The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Gonzalez with two counts of aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon, causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury.
An Elkhart County judge set Gonzalez’s bond at $1 million during his initial court appearance.
