Smoldering mess left after big barn fire in St. Joseph County

Fire crews brought a large barn fire in western St. Joseph County under control after hours of battling flames.

The barn on Early Road, on Sunday, Aug. 31, drew at least 15 fire trucks from multiple departments. Fire officials confirmed that no animals were harmed.

About 50 cows stayed safely at the far edge of the property, away from the fire.

One person went to the hospital with minor injuries, though officials did not specify if it was a property worker or the owner.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.

Officials said the barn’s contents may continue to smolder, but the fire no longer poses a risk to the community.
