Mishawaka Police responded to reports of gunfire at the McDonald’s restaurant at 2771 Lincoln Way East.

Officers were dispatched just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, and found a vehicle with four juveniles inside. According to investigators, a 17-year-old in the car had accidentally shot himself in the leg. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police said the shooting appears to be accidental and that no one else was injured. The department called it an isolated incident and reminded the public to handle firearms responsibly.

“Guns are not toys,” police said in a statement. “They must be treated with caution, and it’s fortunate this incident wasn’t more serious.”
