Taxpayers from South Bend and New Carlisle are pushing back against a proposed data center, citing environmental concerns and a preference for keeping the land in agriculture.
Protest organizer Steve Francis, a Sustainable Energy and Economic Development Consultant, said, “The county council needs to stand up for those of us who live here, not for outsiders using our natural resources.”
Residents gathered outside the County City Building on Tuesday, Oct. 14, to voice frustration, even though a rezoning vote for the site was postponed.
Councilman Randy Figg said he has received more public feedback on this project than any other in his three years on the council, including about 85 emails and one phone call.

Data centers are a waste. They don’t make the claimed jobs, the jobs they do make go to H1B holders and not local talent, and the tax revenue they make over their lifetime will never cover the tax abatements used to lure them here.
All of this while ruining farmland, wasting water, and driving energy costs up.
What a bargain!
