A 35-year-old Elkhart man has been released from jail after learning his sentence had already been served in full.

Marcus D.J. Newton pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in Elkhart County Circuit Court as part of a plea agreement that dismissed more serious charges, including burglary, strangulation and pointing a firearm.

Police say Newton forced his way into a Cassopolis Street home in April 2024, attacked the homeowner, and later returned with a gun, threatening the victim before fleeing.

Newton apologized in court, saying he was remorseful for his actions. With credit for time served, The Goshen News says he will face no additional jail time.
