Former South Bend YMCA property could see new life with becoming new housing

South Bend may soon see new life on the vacant lot south of the Farmers Market, once home to the city’s YMCA.

After a year of demolition and site prep, the city is talking with Century Custom Builders to transform the property into housing.

Assistant Director of Growth and Opportunity Joseph Molnar says the developer has proposed 118 units, including townhomes, apartments and single-family homes.

Affordability is undecided, and Molnar says the project is still in early planning.

WSBT says a full deal could come in the next few months, with construction possibly starting next year.
