Two vehicles were heavily damaged and two people were hospitalized, late Saturday morning, Dec. 6, after a collision at the intersection of U.S. 33 and Lewis Street.
According to police, a 2009 Ford Fusion driven by a 40-year-old male from Elkhart was traveling southeast on U.S. 33 when it entered the intersection and failed to obey the traffic signal. At the same time, a 2001 Toyota Camry driven by a 35-year-old female from Elkhart was turning left from Lewis Street with a green light and the right-of-way.
Investigators say the Camry driver attempted to avoid the crash, but the Ford struck the front end of the Toyota. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage.
The 40-year-old driver of the Ford and his 36-year-old male passenger, also from Elkhart, reported chest pain and were taken to Elkhart General Hospital. The 35-year-old driver of the Toyota and her 7-year-old male passenger from Bristol were not injured.
Police cited the Ford’s driver for disregarding an official traffic control device and failing to yield, resulting in the collision.
