Elkhart County Commissioners are working to clarify how complaints involving dangerous and loose dogs are handled.
The issue surfaced after a Bristol resident complained about roaming dogs entering his property and threatening livestock.
Commissioners say existing county ordinances generally carry civil penalties, while state law provides additional protections when dogs injure people.
County officials are reviewing possible changes that would strengthen enforcement when animals damage property, attack livestock or threaten public safety.
Residents are reminded they can contact the Sheriff’s Office if an unrestrained dog attacks someone without provocation.
