St. Joseph County leaders are considering stronger noise rules for large industrial sites, including future data centers.
County Councilman Bryan Tanner introduced the proposal Tuesday after residents raised concerns. He said the county currently has limited standards and wants new projects to account for noise before approval.
The plan would improve how the county measures sound, including low-frequency vibrations, and enforce the rules through the Building Department.
The proposal would not apply to projects already under construction, including the data center along State Road 2, but could affect future developments.
The council unanimously agreed to table the proposal until its January meeting for further discussion.
