A man accused of killing another man at an Elkhart motel has withdrawn his request to represent himself in court.

Thirty-five-year-old Nicholas Phillip Stanley of Elkhart is charged in the June 24 murder of Allen Cogswell at the Daylite Inn. Police say Cogswell was shot in the head and chest after a man with a long gun knocked on his motel room door and opened fire.

During a court hearing Thursday, Stanley initially sought to drop his public defender, but later told the judge he felt overwhelmed by the legal process and backed out of the request. As a result, several defense motions were withdrawn.

The Goshen News says Stanley also faces a firearm charge and enhancement. His jury trial remains scheduled for March 2.
