Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is backing a new bill to limit how often convicted criminals can challenge their sentences.

House Bill 1314 would close legal loopholes that allow offenders to repeatedly file petitions to reopen closed cases.

Rep. Andrew Ireland, the bill’s author, says the reform is about restoring finality for victims and saving taxpayer resources.

The legislation aims to ensure that only credible new evidence, like D-N-A testing, can trigger a new hearing after a case is fully adjudicated.
