An Elkhart man charged with murder in the death of a toddler is still expected to go to trial June 1.

21-year-old Miguel Freid Garcia appeared in court, where his defense attorney said the team is working to prepare the case and has spoken with an expert who will assist at trial.

The Goshen News says Garcia is accused in the death of a 20-month-old child in December of 2024.

Police say the child was taken to the hospital with a skull fracture. Doctors later determined the injuries were unlikely to have come from an earlier fall, as originally reported.

An autopsy ruled the death a homicide. Garcia’s trial status conference is set for May 7.
