Fight at University Park Mall prompts false gunshot report

(Tom Franklin/95.3 MNC)

A disturbance at University Park Mall briefly raised concern Saturday, Feb. 21, after a report of a gunshot turned out to be unfounded.

According to Mishawaka Police, an off-duty officer working private security at the mall was alerted to a fight near the center court area around 4:50 p.m.

During the incident, dispatch received a report that a single shot had been fired inside the building. Officers and mall security immediately checked the area but found no evidence that a weapon had been discharged. Police determined the report was likely made in error.

Several juveniles connected to the original disturbance were removed from the mall. No injuries were reported and no arrests were immediately announced.

Police say the situation was quickly brought under control and the mall remained open.
