A Marshall County sheriff’s deputy was injured after his squad car was struck while he was investigating a separate crash on U.S. 31.

According to the Indiana State Police, the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 23, near 13th Road. The deputy was parked near the inside shoulder with emergency lights activated while working a crash scene when a northbound gold Chevrolet van lost control.

Police say the van, driven by Carlos Alexis Flores Hernandez, 30, of Peru, Indiana, sideswiped the left side of the deputy’s vehicle. The deputy was inside the squad car at the time of the impact.

Both vehicles were damaged in the crash.

The deputy was transported to the hospital for evaluation and later treated and released, according to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators say Flores Hernandez did not have a valid driver’s license and was arrested by Marshall County deputies.

State police noted that lake-effect snow was falling in the area at the time, creating slick road conditions and requiring reduced speeds.

Authorities are reminding drivers that Indiana law requires motorists to slow down or move over when approaching stationary emergency vehicles and other vehicles displaying flashing hazard lights.

The Indiana State Police is investigating the crash.
