A proposed mountain biking trail at Rum Village Nature Park is drawing significant opposition from community members and environmental advocates.
The plan, which includes a three-mile trail, is part of a broader effort to improve the park. City leaders introduced initial concept designs in January and sought public input on potential upgrades.
However, critics argue the trail would harm the park’s natural environment, including its old-growth forest.
Ecologists and residents voiced concerns about long-term environmental damage, with some urging city officials to abandon the proposal entirely. Opponents say construction could disrupt sensitive habitats that may not recover.
Local officials emphasized that the project is still in its early planning stages and no final decisions have been made. Representatives from South Bend Venues Parks & Arts said community feedback will play a key role moving forward.
The Board of Park Commissioners has not yet received formal plans for the project.
City officials are expected to meet with developers this week to review public input and consider potential revisions to the proposal.
