A man accused of murder in Elkhart appeared in court Wednesday as his case moves closer to trial.
Nicholas Stanley faces charges in the June 2025 death of Allen Cogswell.
During a status conference, the judge did not immediately rule on a prosecution request to limit what evidence can be presented at trial.
Prosecutors are seeking to block arguments that could encourage jury nullification, as well as any reference to the victim’s prior conviction.
The defense argues that history could support a “sudden heat” claim, which may reduce the charge. The judge took the matter under advisement.
Stanley’s next hearing is July 15, with trial scheduled for September 21.
