A South Bend man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to murder in a deadly shooting on the city’s west side.

Jalil Wills, 21, pleaded guilty on March 5, 2026, in connection to the June 2025 shooting death of 37-year-old Kristina Ortiz. The shooting occurred in the 500 block of Wenger Street.

Wills was sentenced to 65 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, leaving 55 years to be served in the Indiana Department of Correction. Under Indiana law, the sentencing range for murder is between 45 and 65 years.

As part of the plea agreement, a charge of criminal recklessness and a felony firearm enhancement were dismissed.

Another man, Nicholas Fairchild, 23, was charged with assisting a criminal in connection to the killing.
